    Background: WARSAW, POLAND

Poland's most prominent dissident intellectual, Jacek Kuron, was released from Warsaw's Rakowiecka prison on August 9 under a recently announced government amnesty. kuron, 50, was driven to his apartment in the capital by police after being freed, one of thousands released in an amnesty declared to mark the 40th anniversary of Communist Party rule. Kuron, a senior adviser to the outlawed Solidarity union movement, was a founder-member of the dissident group KOR, (Workers' Defence Committee). He had been held at Rakowiecka since Solidarity was suppressed and martial law declared in December 1981. Kuron is the third member of KOR, now disbanded, to be freed under the amnesty. Adam Michnik and Zbigniew Romaszewksi were released last week, although a fourth KOR member, Henryk Wujec, is still being detained. In a speech delivered at his trial for plotting to overthrow the government, Kuron called for the abolition of Communism in Poland, and stressed this should be achieved by peaceful means. Kuron's relatives said he appeared to be in reasonable health, despite more than thirty months in jail.
