Background: United States yachtsmen began racing at Newport, Rhode Island Tuesday (August 15) to determine the U.S. yacht to defend the America's Cup against the Australian challenger, Dame Pattie. The Intrepid defeated the defending champion Constellation.

The Intrepid finished the race five minutes and 14 seconds ahead of the Constellation -- the boat which successfully defended the America's Cup in 1964. The winds were from southwest by west and finally southwest. About 75 boats followed and watched the six-legged olympic race and among them was the Australian Dame Pattie (boat with "KA2" on its sail). The winner was sailed by captain Bus Mosbacher who had to work for his victory during the first four and one-half miles of the course. But once the Intrepid shook free from under the Constellation's lee, it was a one-boat race. Mosbacher' yacht widened its lead on every leg except the next to last. The selection committee of the New York Yacht Club will decide from these final trials at Newport the Yacht and crew which will race the Dame Pattie.
