Background: President Habib Bourguiba of Tunisia celebrated the eighteenth anniversary of his return from exile on Saturday (1 June), by opening a new complex of offices for the country's only political organisation, the Destour Socialist Party in Tunis. During the colourful ceremony, the President unveiled a plaque commemorating the event.
The building also houses the new offices where the Party's two Socialist newspapers - 'El Amal' and 'L'Action' - will be produced, and also a new automatic telephone exchange providing a direct link with France.
An automatic telephone exchange became necessary because of the recent increase of tourism in Tunisia. Many of these tourists are Frenchmen, and the old telephone system had become overloaded during the summer months. The new exchange will provide facilities for dialling direct to Paris and thus to many other parts of Europe.
At an inauguration ceremony inside the building, President Bourguiba, now 70-years-old, declared open both the exchange and the newspaper offices. It was attended by a number of foreign dignitaries, including the West German Secretary of State for Economic Co-operation, Herr Jurgen Wischnewsky.
In Tunisia, the anniversary of the President's return from exile is known as the "Festival of Victory Day". His return to his homeland took place in 1955, and he was elected President the following year when Tunisia was granted independence.
