On Monday night, Syria's Defence Minister, Mustafa Tlas Criticised the Middle East policies of Egypt and Iraq at a rally in Damascus attended by President Assad. He described President Sadat of Egypt's visit to Israel last November as a vicious stab to the Arab nation. Major General Tlas said Syria would not agree to Arab solidarity if it was meant to cover up what he said was Egypt's treacherous peace initiative.

SYNOPSIS: Sheikh Sabah was met at Damascus airport on Monday (17 April) by his counterpart Syrian Foreign Minister, Abdul Halim Khaddam.
Kuwait is one of the Arab countries seeking to unite arab states with a common front on possible peace negotiations with Israel. Saudi Arabia is also trying to encourage arab states toward a united front.
A report from Kuwait said that during the talks at the Presidential Palace between President Assad and Sheikh Sabah President Assad rejected Kuwait's new appeal for an Arab Summit attended by President Sadat of Egypt. The report said President Assad refused to attend any Arab Summit until President Sadat declared that his peace initiative with Israel had failed.
