About twenty students were wounded today at the university Rome campus after rioting broke out during a speech by union leader Luciano Lama of the Communist workers union, CGIL.

Background: About twenty students were wounded today at the university Rome campus after rioting broke out during a speech by union leader Luciano Lama of the Communist workers union, CGIL. Mr. Lama was there urging the students to return to classes and return the campus to its regular activities. Students have been occupying the university for the last 15 days as a sign of protest against planned reforms of the university structure by the Minister of Education. Mr. Lama was also speaking to reassure students that the unions would do everything possible to pressure the government into passing reforms demanded by the students. His official reason for speaking was to "inform" the student body of the subject matter discussed so far in talks union leaders with the Minster of Education, Sig. Franco Malfatti Extreme left wing students, calling themselves "Autonomous collectives", who have been occupying the campus in the last two weeks clashed with Communist students. The "Autonomi" (as they are called in Italian) claim that the Communist party is not pushing for the proper reforms: they also claim that it does represent student interests. This morning, students called Mr. lama a "pig" and they were attempting to prevent him from speak at the campus. After Mr. Lama left the extremist student managed to throw the Communist students from the campus and they barricaded themselves inside.
