Background: NUCLEAR SCIENTISTS AND TECHNICIANS FROM 12 EUROPEAN COUNTRIES WORKING AT UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY'S ESTABLISHMENT, WINFRITH HEATH, DORSET, SAW AN IMPORTANT STEP TAKEN ON FEBRUARY 28TH IN THE FIVE-YEAR AGREEMENT TO DESIGN, BUILD AND OPERATE A 20 MEGAWATT HIGH-TEMPERATURE GAS-COOLED REACTOR EXPERIMENT. IT WAS THE SAFE ARRIVAL FROM WEST GERMANY OF A 58-FEET HIGH "BOTTLE", WEIGHING NEARLY 50 TONS AND MADE FROM MILD STEEL 2 INCHES THICK.

THE "BOTTLE", MADE BY MANNESMANN-EXPORT, G.M.B.H., WILL FORM THE PRESSURE VESSEL FOR THE REACTOR EXPERIMENT KNOWN AS THE DRAGON PROJECT. THE VESSEL ARRIVED AT SOUTHAMPTON ON FEBRUARY 25 AND WAS TRANSPORTED BY ROAD WITH A SPECIAL ESCORT TO WINFRITH.

PLACING THE PRESSURE VESSEL IN THE REACTOR BUILDING, WHICH IS NOW READY TO RECEIVED, WILL BE THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS ASSEMBLY OF THE REACTOR EXPERIMENT.

TWELVE NATIONS SIGNED THE AGREEMENT IN 1959 SETTING THE DRAGON PROJECT. THESE WERE THE UNITED KINGDOM, THE SIX EURATION COUNTRIES (BELGIUM, FRANCE, GERMANY, ITALY, LUXEMBOURG, AND THE NETHERLANDS), AUSTRIA, DENMARK, NORWAY, SWEDEN AND SWITZERLAND. STAFF DRAWN FROM THE 12 COUNTRIES HAS REACHED 250.

A LARGE NUMBER OF CONTRACTS HAVE BEEN NEGOTIATED WORTH MORE THAN GBP4 MILLION AND EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN PURCHASED FROM A NUMBER OF THE MEMBER COUNTRIES. THE TOTAL COST OF THE "DRAGON" PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO BE GBP13,680,000.
