Background: The people of Bangladesh went into national mourning yesterday (Sunday) in memory of the estimated three-million who died in the fight for freedom. Flags throughout the nation -- including the one outside the home of Prime Minister Mujibur Rahman -- flew at half mast and there were nationwide ceremonies to commemorate Martyr's Day.
Proclaiming the day of mourning, Sheikh Mujib had urged the people to rededicate themselves to the task of reconstruction so that the blood of martyrs should not have been sacrificed in vain.
