Background: The Twelfth Regional Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization (F.A.O.) opened its Ministerial Conference in Tokyo on Monday (23rd september).
Agriculture Ministers and Deputy-Ministers from Asian nations and developed countries came together under the auspices of the United Nations organisation to discuss the region's growing food supply problems and to suggest solutions for action by the F.A.O. and other international bodies.
After opening speeches by representatives of the Japanese government and F.A.O. leaders, the delegates settled down to studying the result of a technical review of Asia's food situation prepared by a technical committee which had been meeting in Tokyo since 17th September.
Delegates were first welcomed to the Ministerial Plenary Session, which will last until 27th September, by Deputy F.A.O. Director-General Mr. Roy I. Jackson, acting Japanese Prime Minister Eiichi Nishimura, and Japanese Agriculture Minister Tadao Kuraishi.
