Background: Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana has made a three-day visit to the Volta Region, integrated with independent Ghana in 1957, to meet chieftains and the people at durbars held in his honour.

At each durbar he called for full support by the chieftains and people in working for the development of Ghana. He warned against those who sought to use violence for their own ends - at one durbar he refused to meet some chieftains; they were 'ringleaders of violence', he said.

The Prime Minister received many gifts - one, a mobile workshop presented by the United States for use in repairing agricultural machines.

On the last stage of the trip, the Prime Minister and his party crossed the Volta River by ferry at Tefle to return to Accra.
