French driver Didier Pironi won the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on July 3. His Ferrari averaged 187.3 kilometres an hour during the 72-lap, 306 kilometre race. He held the lead after overtaking compatriot Alain Prost's Renault in the seventh lap. At one point, Pironi held a lead of 30 seconds over the second place getter, Brazilian Nelson Piquet, in a Brabham. Third was the Finn, Keke Rosberg, whose Williams made up a 15-second deficit to finish only slightly behind Piquet. Austrian driver, Nikki Lauda, was fourth in a McLaren. The other drivers were all lapped. The win increases Pironi's world championship prospects. The 30-year-old Frenchman is now just one point behind the leader, John Watson of Britain. Watson's hopes collapsed after his McLaren developed tyre trouble. He finished ninth.
