Background: In a trial of car against mud and water, competitors in the annual Austin Seven Car Club Rally at Victoria, Australia, recently went all out to prove that tough cross-country going is not beyond a well-seasoned veteran.

Up-slope and downhill they went, skidding, sliding and slithering along, trying their hardest to beat the pitfalls of the track by ingenious dodges. One driver even fitted a snorkel to the exhaust pipe of his car, although in the end it did not do him much good.

Lucky or unlucky - they all seemed to enjoy it enormously and the stalwart vintage Austins gave their best. Some did start bursting at the seams and others gave up their mechanical ghosts altogether - but the majority stood the test remarkably well to show that the proof of the car is in the driving, no matter how old the vehicle and how bad the track.
