Background: DAMASCUS, SYRIA

Thousands of Syrians, Palestinians and Lebanese refugees took to the streets of Damascus on July 13, to demonstrate against Israel and the United States. The demonstrators assembled in the Syrian capital to protest the Israeli invasion of Lebanon and to condemn what the called 'US participation' in the siege of Beirut. As they marched towards the United States embassy, the refugees held posters of Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad and waved national flags. They were joined by a group of nurses as the President of the Palestine national Council (parliament in exile) Khaled Al-Fahoum urged the arab word to withhold the supply of oil and withdraw their funds from US banks. Mr. Fahoum also said the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) would never leave Lebanon and Beirut. Syrian police threw a cordon around the embassy as the demonstrators gathered there to call fort he downfall of the Reagan administration.
