Background: Motor racing and Italy's Lamberto Leoni, driving a Chevron Ferrari, has won the 11th European Formula Two motor race in the 1977 European championships. But the overall championship table is still led by Rene Arnaux of France.
SYNOPSIS: Arnaux came to grief early on in the first heat of the day on Sunday (7 August). His car was involved in a collision on the first lap of the trial and the Renault was in no condition to continue with the day's racing.
Arnaux's withdrawal left the Formula Two race at the track in Misano Adriatico wide open. Before his crash he'd been the odds-on favourite to win.
At the start of the second heat to determine the day's winner all the local support was for Italy's Lamberto Leoni in his Chevron Ferrari.
And it was Leoni in car number 18 who went straight into the lead as the cars went round the first bend followed by Eddie Cheever of the United States in second position in car number 15 and his teammate Ingo Hoffman of Brazil in number 16. Leoni stayed out there in front for the whole of the 30-lap race.
Nineteen cars had made it into the final heat but there was little doubt about the drivers who were going to finish in the first three positions. Cheever and Hoffman swapped places a couple of times during the race but as the cars finally came up to receive the chequered flag, Leoni was there in first place with Cheever behind him and Ingo Hoffman in third.
So Cheever took the honours this time but Arnaux still leads the points table with 45 and Cheever next with 36.
