Background: A crowd estimated at 700-thousand people packed the streets of Sydney to watch one of the most impressive displays of pageantry seen in the fifty for years. The spectacle was a gigantic procession which marked the climax of Sydney's fanfare of dozens of bands, the pounding of marching feet, and the cheers of enthusiastic spectators who jammed the footpaths round the route of the big march. In George Street, outside the Town Hall, the Governor took the salute as the parade swung past. And in pride of place, a float of gleaming white, carrying the Waratah Princess, Miss Glenice Hill, of Hurlstone Park.
Police described the crowd as the biggest ever to gather over a two-mile route. All together 64 decorated floats were included in the great cavalcade of colour. A flashback to the days of Sydney's old steam trams brought laughter and waves from the excited assembly. Tableux depicting the state's progress in public services -- such as this Water Board exhibit - featured prominently, but the lighter touch was provided by an any off comic figures, clowns, and performing acrobats. The A.B.C. entry, a riverboat steamer, provided its own music.
An old horse-drawn ambulance provided spectacular contrast with the latest in streamlined modern ambulance vehicles. Laughter and enjoyment were the keynotes of the occasion. A big group of pedigree dogs strutted proudly beside their owners in another section of the parade, but one intruder made a daring appearance, in spite of aggressive growls. Advances in interplanetary rockets were also among the themes depicted by the floats. Dozens of people collapsed in the heat, while watching the procession, and had to receive treatment.
