Background: Randy Mamola of the United States won the 500cc British Motorcycling Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday (10 August). Mamola's victory kept alive his hopes of taking the world championship from the current leader Kenny Roberts of the United States, who finished in second place.

SYNOPSIS: Mamola's Suzuki--number 10--has been running well in recent GrandsPrix.

In contrast, Britain's Barry Sheene has been plagued by mechanical problems.

Mamola took the lead at the start of the race. His strategy was to build a fast peace early--the approach that suited his rival Roberts least.

The race was over 28 laps of the Silverstone circuit--a total of 82 miles (132 kilometres).

The huge crowd were treated to a thrilling battle between Mamola, Roberts and Italy's Marco Lucchinelli who juggled the lead for lap after lap at speeds of up to 170 miles per hour. (274 KM per hour).

But for former world champion, Sheene it was another mechanical failure after a poor start.

Mamola was in front for all but two laps but Roberts' Yamaha--number one--was always in close attendance. And the leading three were well clear of the others.

Roberts briefly got in front by slipping past on the inside.

Lucchinelli, in third place in the championship, also rode his Suzuki well, but Mamola showed impressive determination to regain the lead and go on to win by 11 seconds from Roberts.

It was the finest performance of the 20-year-old Californian's career and keeps the championship alive until the deciding race in Germany.
