Background: The Viet Cong used sophisticated Soviet-made 140-mm. rockets, mortars and recoilless rifles to shell the United States Air Base at Bien Hoa near Saigon on Friday (May 12). Six United States Air Force men were killed and 29 were wounded. Military spokesmen said the Viet Cong inflicted "moderate" damage to planes and buildings.
The attack lasted 15 minutes, and might have been worse if a United State plane had not spotted the attackers and driven them off. The Bien Hoa base serves as a base for more than half the United States air strikes in South Viet Nam.
The 140 mm. rockets have a ranged of about 10,000 metres. Until the Bien Hoa attack they had been seen only in the northern provinces of South Viet Nam, near the demilitarized zone. There were an estimated 124 hits on the base, but the rounds did not seem to be concentrated on any particular target within the base.
Most of the Air Force men killed had been inside the barracks shown near the end of this film. One other airman was killed when a rocket round hit an ammunition dump.
Security on the base has been tightened for fear that more attacks will follow.
