Background: INTRODUCTION: The world's top racing drivers have been testing their machines in the first practice session for Saturday's (18 July) British Formula One Grand Prix. French drivers Rene Arnoux and Alain Prost of the Renault team made the fastest times around the Silverstone circuit, this year's venue for the race, during Thursday's (16 July) session. But Britain's Lotus team drew as much attention by continuing to practice despite being told they were banned from the race on technical grounds.

SYNOPSIS: Australia's Alan Jones - he will be hoping to repeat his British Grand Prix victory of last year.

This is the controversial Lotus 888, now disqualified because its double-chasis construction contravenes regulations. Driver Nigel Mansell only managed 17th place in practice.

France's Rene Arnoux did better in his Renault, taking first place with an average speed of 236.05 kilometres per hour (about 140 m.p.h.).

Carlos Reutemann from Argentina, currently leading the championship with 37 points, was sixth fastest on Thursday.

Second place in practice went to winner Arnoux Renault team-mate Alain Prost. He won the French Grand Prix earlier this month, and will be seen as a serious contender at Silverstone on Saturday (18 July).

Gilles Villeneuve of Canada is also among the favourites for the race, although at practice his Ferrari seemed to need a lot of attention from the mechanics.

Brazil's Nelson Piquet - he will need more luck than recently. He crashed in the Monaco Grand Prix, and had victory taken from him by rain in France.

Villeneuve again - he finished tenth.

Then Alan Jones, of the Williams team, which dominated Formula One in 1979 and 80, followed by Nigel Mansell in the disqualified Lotus.

And again the Frenchman Alain Prost.

A driver's eye's view of the Silverstone circuit, as seen from Alain Prost's Renault, the second fastest car in practice. With team-mate Rene Arnoux leading the field on Thursday, the Frenchmen seemed well-placed for Saturday's race, round nine of the 1981 world championship.
