Background: A group of 61 American students who flew to Ghana in August on a charter flight exchange programme have been stranded in Accra for the last two weeks. A spokesman for the students claimed that six of the group had already lost study bursaries as a result of being late for the school term in the United States.
The students have been demonstrating outside the American embassy in Accra in an effort to get officials to repatriate them, but so far the officials have refused to have anything to do with them. The students claim that the embassy will not help them because they are black.
