Background: Military activity in Cambodia continues to be concentrated around Taing Kauk, 52 miles (83 kms) north-east of Phnom Penh. It was here that the Communists halted the Cambodian drive up Route Six to relieve the provincial capital of Kompong Thom which began in September. The Cambodians eventually regained possession of the area and ever since have been engaged in mopping-up operations in preparation for a fresh drive north.

On Monday Cambodian troops supported by armour entered the village of Kan Thum, just east of Taing Kauk - or at least what was left of the village which had been devastated in an earlier firefight with the Communists. Both sides suffered light casualties. Most of the village had fled, but a helicopter was called in to take out one stubborn family who had lost all their possessions.

The military activity in the area has created the inevitable refugee problem. Scores of people who have no homes to return to are being billeted in Taing Kauk and existing on relief supplies. Many of them are sick and crowded around Cambodian troops handing out medicine and pills as well as concentrated food. With the ever-present possibility of fresh fighting in the area, their future is not an optimistic one.
