    Background: CHONBURI, THAILAND

Water Buffalo, known as the tractors of south-east Asia, work in the rice paddies 364 days a year. Their one day off is taken yp with races and fancy dress parades. The special day was instituted by King Rama the Sixth in 1910. The Asian buffalo is a docile beast, unlike its North American counterpart. Buffalo are regarded as extremely valuable, and are hired out by farmers to poorer neighbours who cannot afford one of their own. In the annual races the buffalo are usually ridden by the sons of their owners. who appear in fancy dress. For the rest of the year, the great fields or heading for the mud wallows with children on their backs after a hard day's work.
