Background: TEMA HARBOUR, JUST OUTSIDE ACCRA, WAS THE SCENE OF A CEREMONIAL FAREWELL ON WEDNESDAY, WHEN LEADING FIGURES IN GHANA'S NATIONAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT GATHERED ON BOARD THE MOTOR VESSEL "ACCRA" TO BID FAREWELL TO THE SHIP, WHICH HAS CARRIED PASSENGERS TO AND FROM PORTS THROUGHOUT WEST AFRICA FOR THE PAST EIGHTEEN YEARS.

M.V. ACCRA WAS NAMED AFTER THE CITY OF ACCRA AND PUT INTO SERVICE ON THE WEST AFRICAN COAST IN 1949 BY THE ELDER DEMPSTER LINES. THE OWNERS SAID THIS WEEK THAT THE VESSEL IS BEING WITHDRAWN FROM SERVICE BECAUSE OF THE COMPETITION OF AIRLINES.

THE CEREMONY WAS ATTENDED BY A LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE, INCLUDING COMMISSIONER OF POLICE AND MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL, MR. J.E. NUNOO AND THE GHANA CHIEF JUSTICE, MR. JUSTICE AKUFFO-ADDO. ALSO PRESENT WAS MR JUSTICE OLLENU, AND APPEAL COURT JUDGE, WHO IS ALSO CHAIRMAN OF THE GREATER ACCRA REGION OF ADMINISTRATION, AND DEPUTY COMMISSIONER OF POLICE MR SMITH. MEMBERS OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS AND OTHER IMPORTANT PERSONALITIES ALSO ATTENDED THE CEREMONY ABOARD THE SHIP.

GHANA AREA MANAGER OF ELDER DEMPSTER LINES, MR. J.D. PRIFTI PAID TRIBUTE TO THE M.V. ACCRA AND REGRETTED THAT IT HAD NOW TO BE WITHDRAWN FROM SERVICE.

MR. JUSTICE OLLENU, WHO WAS A COUNCILLOR OF THE THEN ACCRA TOWN COUNCIL WHEN THE SHIP WAS COMMISSIONED IN 1949, ASKED THE COMPANY TO CONSIDER NAMING ANOTHER OF THEIR VESSELS AFTER THE CITY OF ACCRA. THEN THE SHIP'S CAPTAIN CAPTAIN O'SULLIVAN, HANDED BACK TO MR. JUSTICE OLLENU A PLAQUE WHICH HAS BEEN PRESENTED TO THE SHIP FROM THE PEOPLE OF ACCRA.

MR. SMITH SAID HE WAS SURE ELDER DEMPSTER LINES HAD NEVER ANY OCCASION TO REGRET NAMING THE SHIP AFTER THE CITY WHICH HAD MADE SUCH A BIG IMPACT ON THE WORLD IN RECENT TIMES.
