Background: East Germany is helping to bring technology to the formerly backward rural economy of Mozambique. One of the devices used to promote farming efficiency is a radio-telephone network.

SYNOPSIS: Maputo, well south of the equator, may have been thought an unlikely place to find three young radio technicians from east Germany. But Willie Wolf, Norbert Heizer and Lothar Winzer are used to working on aerials at great heights. They are helping to give southern Mozambique a VHF (Very High Frequency) radio network, which the authorities say will improve the agricultural economy.

Farming is the most important sector of the economy but the farms are isolated. The radio-telephone system is intended to and the isolation, linking 34 states farms and 20 mobile transmitters to each other and to the regional centre in Maputo.

Last year (1978) Mozambique had to import 150,000 tons of food. But most of it could have been grown within the republic. Agricultural experts are scarce and radio telephones are intended to make better use of their advice by making it instantly available to the farm workers. The network will also be used to coordinate transport and distribution facilities for handling feed and fertilizer, seed stocks grain...and the delicate and valuable pineapples.
