Background: MANY GUESTS WERE PRESENT FOR THE DEDICATION CEREMONY IN BANGKOK OF A NEW TOLL TELECOMMUNICATIONS NETWORK, A PROJECT JOINTLY SPONSORED BY THE UNITED STATES AND THAI GOVERNMENTS. THE CEREMONY WAS HELD ON NOVEMBER 20.

THE AMERICAN AMBASSADOR, MR. GRAHAM MARTIN, IN HIS SPEECH SAID THE UNDERTAKING BY THAILAND AND THE UNITED STATES DEMONSTRATED ONCE AGAIN "OUR COMMON DEVOTION TO PEACEFUL PROGRESS, AND TO THE SPREAD OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING."
FIELD MARSHAL THANOM KITTIKACHORN, THE THAI PRIME MINISTER, WHO PRESIDED OVER THE CEREMONY, LATER TOURED THE CENTRE TO INSPECT THE INTRICATE EQUIPMENT.

THE NATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATION NETWORK COVERS APPROXIMATELY ONE HALF OF THAILAND AND IS PART OF AN AMERICAN AID PROGRAMME FOR TELECOMMUNICATIONS DEVELOPMENT IN SOUTHEAST ASIA WHICH BEGAN IN 1958. THAILAND'S SHARE OF THIS PROGRAMME WAS $21 MILLION (U.S.) OF WHICH $14 MILLION WAS IN GRANTS; $7 MILLION IN DEVELOPMENT LOANS.

MORE THAN A THOUSAND MILES OF CABLE PLANT AND RADIO RELAY MICROWAVE SYSTEMS ARE INVOLVED. THE IMPRESSIVE NATIONAL TOLL CENTRE CONSTITUTES THE HUB OF THE NETWORK.
