Background: Health officials from 27 African countries are expected to discuss the reported Guinea cholera outbreak at the 20th session of the World Health Organisation's Regional Committee for africa, which opened in Accra on Wednesday (9 September).

The reported outbreak was not originally on the agenda for the week-long conference, but some delegates said before the conference started that they would raise the subject.

The World Health Organisation has reported at least 2,000 cholera cases in Guinea, with 60 deaths--the first time the disease has appeared south of the Sahara.

The Ghanaian Foreign Minister Mr. Victor Owusu opened the Session, mentioning that the original aim of the W.H.O. was to prevent epidemics. But the expansion of its activities through international co-operation has placed the organisation in a unique position for raising the levels of health everywhere.

More than a hundred delegates at the Session will examine the work of the World Health Organisation in Africa for the past year ending June 1970. Items on the agenda include surveillance and evaluation of health services.
