Background: Two Christian churches in Beirut were blasted in dynamite attacks on Monday (October 30). There were no casualties, and - apart from debris from shattered windows - damage was not extensive. The first explosion was in the St George's Maronite Cathedral in the heart of Beirut, at about 22.30 local time - 20.30 GMT. Almost immediately afterwards, another church in a suburb was rocked by a similar explosion. Police, who identified the cause of both blasts as dynamite, were unable to suggest a reason for the attacks.
