Background: A massive nationwide industrial strike which has threatened Denmark for several weeks began on Wednesday (21 March), sending industry and transport into confusion.

Goods began piling up at railway depots, while retail and manufacturing stockpiles dwindled away.

About 250-thousand workers -- representing two thirds of the industrial labour force and one tenth of the entire public and private work force, were either locked out or on strike in the biggest work stoppage to hit Denmark since a general strike which lasted five weeks in 1936.

Danish shipping was also struck. Sailors on Danish ships stopped work as soon as their vessels reached Danish waters. Danish dock workers have also refused to unload foreign ships.

Unless a settlement is reached within a few days, the strike will spread to include the oil and fuel industry and threatens to bring nearly all transport to a halt.

Just how long the strike -- sparked off by a pay dispute -- will last, is anybody's guess. Observers say it could last up to a month.
