TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 2: MR BEGIN: "We (indistinct) have yesterday the decision which we will take after we hear from the Secretary and perhaps also we shall hear President Sadat's speech on Saturday."

SEQ. 3: MR VANCE: "Let me say I think we've just got to keep our eye on the paths we have ahead of us and that is to get the talks going again and to try and find a solution."

SEQ. 5: SADAT: "Peace cannot be achieved through imposing settlement on other's land and also not only imposed, but to be defended also. This is really some logic that no one can understand in the world. We do not seek peace at any price. Not at all. They will be wrong in Israel if they thought of this."

Mr Vance brought to President Sadat an offer from Mr Begin to refrain from making public statements if the Egyptians return to the negotiating table. President Sadat is expected to announce his next move at an emergency sitting of the Egyptian Parliament at the weekend. American representatives flew back to Israel after Mr Sadat's meeting with Mr Vance. Mr Begin said their reports would be studied prior to an Israeli response. In Washington in his first "State of the Union" message, United States President Jimmy Carter said the world has a precious opportunity for peace in the Middle East which may not recur in the present generation.

Background: United States Secretary of State Cyrus Vance flew from Israel to Egypt on Friday (20 January) to meet Egyptian President Anwar Sadat after seeing Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. The purpose of the mission was, in his own words "To put the peace talks back on course". After the talks, Mr Sadat said the door to peace was not closed, but gave no indication of when he was prepared to re-open political negotiations with Israel.

SYNOPSIS: Before Mr Vance's departure both he and Mr Begin were non-committal about hopes of resuming the talks.

After seeing Mr Vance, Mr Sadat had a tough message for Israel.
