Background: PRESIDENT KENNEDY FLEW TO CAPE CANAVERAL YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) TO WATCH A FIRING OF THE LATEST VERSION OF THE POLARIS MISSILE, THE A-3. CLAD IN A NAVY-BLUE JACKET TO WARD OFF THE OCEAN CHILL, HE FLEW IN A HELICOPTER TO A TRACKING SHIP 25 MILES (40 KILOMETRES) OFF THE CAPE.

FROM THE BRIDGE OF SHIP HE WATCHED THROUGH BINOCULARS AS THE MISSILE WAS FIRED FROM THE SUBMERGED SUBMARINE ANDREW JACKSON TO A TARGET 1,500 MILES (2,400 KMS) AWAY. THE TRIAL LAUNCHING WAS A COMPLETE SUCCESS.

THE U.S. PRESIDENT HAD A LOOK AT OTHER SPACE PROJECTS IN CAPE CANAVERAL. HIS VISIT WAS INTERPRETED AS A RENEWED BID FOR SUPPORT OF THE U.S. RACE TO GET A MAN ON THE MOON FIRST.

HE WAS SHOWN A GIANT "SUPER BOOSTER" ROCKET, SCHEDULED NEXT MONTH TO SEND A 16-TON SATELLITE INTO ORBIT AROUND THE EARTH.
