Background: TOKYO, JAPAN AND LONDON, UK

A visiting Soviet team took a decisive 3-0 victory from Japanese men's volleyball squad in Tokyo on May 25. Using high attack and block the Soviets overwhelmed the Japanese during the match. In the second set Japan fought back and led from 7-1 to 12-6 but were unable to maintain their advantage. The result (15-8, 15-13, 15-11) puts the Soviet 4-1 in the friendly series which began on May 19 and ended in Yokohama on May 27.

A Japanese women's squad took the Hitachi Cup beating the United States 3-0 in London on May 26. The standard of play was the highest quality seen in Britain, with the Japanese players displaying superb defence techniques. The US women led 6-1 in the first set but gradually the Japanese absorbed all the pressure and took control of the match. In just over an hour the Japanese won 16-14, 15-13, 15-8 providing themselves with useful practice for the forthcoming Los Angeles Olympics.
