Background: CHAD'S PRESIDENT FRANCIS TOMBALBAYE OPENED AN IMPORTANT NEW ROAD BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER BARH SARA NEAR FORT-ARCHAMBAULT ON WEDNESDAY (JANUARY 7), AND TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO PAY HOMAGE TO THE INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATION WHICH AIDED THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE PROJECT.

THE BRIDGE IS ONE OF SEVERAL PROJECTS IN THE COUNTRY TO HAVE BEEN FINANCED BY THE EUROPEAN FUND FOR DEVELOPMENT (F.E.D.).

THE FUND'S REPRESENTATIVE IN CHAD, M. DHOMBRES, CONGRATULATED THE COUNTRY ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW BRIDGE, AND OUTLINED FURTHER IMPORTANT PROJECTS WHICH HE HOPED TO SEE UNDERTAKEN DURING 1970.

AMONG THE EUROPEAN VIPs WHO JOINED PRESIDENT TOMBALBAYE AT THE OPENING WERE FRENCH SECRETARY OF STATE YVON BOURGES, AND THE FRENCH AMBASSADOR TO CHAD.

THE PRESIDENT SAID THAT HE WAS ESPECIALLY GRATEFUL FOR FRANCE'S CO-OPERATION WITH CHAD, AND REQUESTED M. BOURGES TO CONVEY HIS GRATITUDE TO THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT.

PUBLIC WORKS MINISTER MICHEL DJIDINGAR, ALSO PRESIDENT, SAID THAT THE NEW BRIDGE WAS AN IMPORTANT PROJECT IN THE IMPROVEMENT OF CHAD'S COMMUNICATIONS -- WHICH FIGURED HIGH ON THE GOVERNMENT'S LIST OF PRIORITIES.

AFTER THE SPEECHES, THE OPENING CEREMONY WAS MARKED BY TWO TRADITIONS -- THE RITUAL SACRIFICE OF AN ANIMAL BY THE CHIEF OF THE MANDA PEOPLE, FOLLOWED BY PRESIDENT TOMBALBAYE CUTTING A RIBBON TO OPEN THE BRIDGE TO TRAFFIC.
