Background: Mr Edward Heath, the British Prime Minster. left London today by Royal Air Force jet on the first leg of his journey to the British Commonwealth Conference which opens in Singapore on January 14th. My Heath is visiting Cyprus, Pakistan, India and Malaysia during his tour abroad.
Mr Heath made no comment before boarding the aircraft to start his journey. The Singapore conference, the first meeting of Commonwealth leaders since January 1969, is expected to be dominated by Britain's proposal to sell arms to South Africa.
Before he left, Mr Heath recorded a television interview in which he said he thought the Commonwealth could survive the possible loss of some of its members over the South African arms issue.
He also reported good progress on joint Commonwealth arrangements for the defence of South-East Asia, and said he saw no conflict between Britain's membership of the Commonwealth and its application to join the European Common Market.
