Background: The final results of the Intercontinental Basketball Cup Competition which ended in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Tuesday (19 August), gave the Soviet Union team a clear two point victory. By winning their needle match against their old rivals from the United States by 71 to 65, they knocked the home team down to fourth place in final match-point listings.

The Russian team finished with 15 points, two points ahead of Yugoslavia, with Italy, Canada, and United States all on twelve. With this win the Russians are well set to keep their Olympic title at the 1976 Games in Montreal.

For both the Russians and the Americans, the Intercontinental was regarded as an important run-up to the Olympics. The Russians became Olympic champions by beating the U.S.A. by a single point, so both sides felt that Tuesday's match was particularly significant.

But the Russians had not had it all their own way. Only two nights before, on Sunday (17 August) they had been narrowly beaten by the Canadians, 86-84, in Toronto.

Many experts had predicted the Russians would win the Continental Cup, when they bean the U.S.A. on Saturday (2 August) in the final match of the European section of the Intercontinental. The Russians' away legs of their ties against Brazil, and Mexico were all won by the visitors.
