Background: Princess Anne, daughter of Britain's Queen Elizabeth, arrived in Khartoum on Thursday evening. She is spending three days in Sudan.
The Princess was greeted by the British Ambassador, who introduced her to the Sudanese Foreign Minister, Dr. Mansour Khalid. After meeting local dignitaries she then drove to the President's Palace to be received by President Jaafar El-Nimeiry. President Nimeiry, who came to power in a bloodless coup in 1969, will visit Britain next month. The palace, situated near the place where the White and Blue Niles converge, was the residence of the British Governor-General in the 50 years Britain and France jointly administered Sudan before it achieved independence 17 years ago. The palace is used for formal occasions; the President lives in a simple house near Khartoum airport.
