Background: Canada, through the Colombo Plan, has donated to the Singapore Vocational Institute,67,000 U.S. dollars worth of equipment.

The gift includes twelve machine lathes, one surface grinder, sheet metals and bench drills and an industrial gas furnace.

The Institute was opened in June 1963, and its principal is Mr. A.B. Kilb of Onterio, Canada. His assistant is Mr. Taw Cheng Hock, of Singapore.

The Institute has 323 full time students and 435 part-time students, all between the ages of 15 and 18 years old. The full-time students are doing a two-year course.

The only courses in operation are those related to the preparation of young men for entry into industry in the skilled trades or for upgrading the apprentice and journeymen.
