Background: Last year's Wimbledon Lady's Singles Winner -- Martina Navratilova, beat California Tracy Austin on Sunday (25 March) in the final of the Avon Women's Tennis Tournament at New York's Madison Square Garden. Tracy Austin did not win a point until the fourth game of the first set, but fought back hard to take the second set 3-6. Top seeded Miss Navratilova regained her form in the final set to win six-three, three-six, six-two.

SYNOPSIS: In this -- one of the finest games of the first set -- Miss Navratilova, receives service, then shows here dominance over the 16-year old high school girl from Rolling Hills. The Czech girl wins the rally to bring the score to five-one.

Set point and Martina takes it with this magnificent smash in reply to a high volley.

But, in the second set, Tracy Austin reproduced the form she showed to halt the Czechoslovakian's thirty-seven match win streak last winter in Dallas.

Serving at set-point, Tracy Austin again forces another long rally...

...and the set goes to the American teenager. Now it's one-set-all.

In the final set, Miss Navratilova regained her poise, and quickly swept to match point, with Miss Austin serving.

With a back-hand drop-volley, Martina wins the title and one hundred thousand dollars first prize. As runner-up, Tracy Austin won a pleasant haul for a schoolgirl - fifty-two thousand dollars.
