Background: South African Bobby Cole shot his second consecutive round of 66 to take a narrow lead in the British Open Golf Championship at Carnoustie, Scotland, on Friday (11 July).
Cole, with a third round, 12 under par total of 204, leads Australian Jack Newton by one stroke.
The young Australian fired a course record 65 on Friday, clipping a stroke off the previous record, which Bobby Cole set with his first 66 on Thursday, and equalling the lowest round ever played in any British Open.
Earlier in the day a treble American challenge launched by Johnny Miller, Tom Watson and Hale Irwin looked likely to set the pace.
But all three faded in varying degrees, leaving Miller close-up with a total of 206, Watson a stroke behind in fourth place and Irwin a further shot back in a select group including his compatriots, Jack Nicklaus and John Mahaffey and South Africa's Anries Oosthuizen.
Another ideal day meant a further ??? of low scores with 12 players breaking seventy on the par ???2 course.
The local golfer David Hui??? a surprise halfway leader, collapsed with a third round 76??? leaving the british Challenge to Neil Coles, who ??? a 67 leaving ??? four strokes behind the leader. Peter Oosterhuis is ??? further stroke behind Coles.
