Background: Liverpool, England--July 19........Portugal vanquished Brazil 3-1 at Liverpool's Goodison Park ground on Tuesday night to qualify for the quarter-finals of the World Cup. The Portuguese win sent Brazil, twice World Cup champions, to the brink of soccer extinction.

Two brilliant goals by Mozambique's "Black Panther" Eusebio brought the Portugese into the last eight and gave the Brazilians their second thrashing in a week. Portugal now head group three with 6 points, while Hungary need only to draw against Bulgaria to win the group's second place.

In addition, Portugal had two other outstanding forwards in Antonio Simoes and Jose Torres. Simoes did an enormous amount of work and his dribbling and passing skill was of the highest. Jose Augusto did a fine mid-field link job and team captain Mario Coluna efficiently supported his defence as well as aiding attacks. The new, younger Brazilian defence failed miserably, in contrast. Even veteran Emil Denilson couldn't find form.

Some 45,000 spectators watched Portugal start ominously well, with Eusebio taking a free-kick 30 years (10 m.) out just after two minutes. Manga, the new Brazilian goalie, showed all kinds of worry just hanging on to low shot. Minutes later, Eusebio took another shot, adding more lines of worry to Brazilian's already creased forehead.

Early on, Pele was felled by a rough but fair tackle, and from that moment on, ceased to be a factor in what was an uneven match from the start.

Portugal went ahead with an ungainly but deserved goal in the 15th minute. Eusebio sent a high cross over to the goalmouth, where Manga tried unsuccessfully to fist it away. Instead, he deflected it on to Simoes' head, and back it went to the netting. Portugal 1, Brazil 0.

Then Eusebio made it 2-0 in the 26th minute. Augusto took a freekick for Portugal and sent another high cross into the goalmouth. There, giant-sized Torres was waiting to head it down to Eusebio. The star centre-forward made no error and headed it down into the far left corner from four yards out.

At the interval, Portugal looked very much in command. Pele was badly hurt, and could make no mark at all on the game, whereas his rival for centre-forward of the tournament, Eusebio, held the match in his hand. Pele did not even come out at the beginning of the second half.

Rildo scored Brazil's first goal in the 73rd minute from the edge of the penalty area. But it was more a Portugese defence error than good play by the former World Champions.

Then, in the 85th minute, Eusebio received a corner kick some seven yards from the goalmouth. The "Panther" almost put his low left foot shot through the net to clinch the game and smash Brazil's morale and chances for a third World Cup.

The defeat of Brazil marked the end of that country's 8-year reign over the world soccer. Even if they remain in the running through a miracle win by Bulgaria over Hungary, the team will never be the same. One wonders what the reaction will be in Brazil.
