Background: An estimated quarter of a million Socialist mourners marched through Madrid streets on Saturday (8 April) to the burial of former Republican premier Francisco Largo Caballero. Senor Largo Caballero had died in Paris in exile in 1946.

SYNOPSIS: He was the first of the late General Francisco Franco's Civil War enemies to be brought back to Spain for reburial. In the 32 years since his death he had lain in the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris alongside the bodies of the Paris commune fighters. The Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) had brought his body back for reburial in Madrid.

Senior largo Caballero had been known in his lifetime as the Spanish Lenin, and was head of the Socialist General Workers' Union.

Mourners inside and outside the cemetery, many of them veteran Socialist militants, raised clenched fists in salute and sang the Socialist anthem, the Internationale. For older mourners, it was homage for the man who had been their Prime Minister for eight months during the three years of the Civil War.

Among the multitudes paying their belated last respects were the present Spanish Socialist leader, Senor Felipe Gonzalez, and three of the dead man's surviving children. Before he died in Paris, Senor Largo Caballero had said he wanted eventually to be buried in madrid's civil cemetery alongside the grave of his wife.
