Background: Operation "Dewey Canyon Two", a joint United States-South Vietnamese operation in northwest South Vietnam is in full swing against communist forces in the area. The operation was mounted on January 30 and involves 9,000 US troops and 20,000 from the South Vietnamese Army. Intelligence reports suggest they are facing a buildup of about 20,000 North Vietnamese troops in the area. The Americans have denied that any ground troops from the operation have crossed the border into neutral Laos and also denied reports that US helicopters have been used to ferry South Vietnamese forces into the neighbouring kingdom.
