Background: India's national hockey team, once again among the favourites for victory at the Munich olympics, had a hard struggle to beat a Punjab state eleven in a pre-Munich tour on Thursday (July 20). The Punjab is are currently Indian national champions and they fought hard to hold the Olympic hopefuls to a 2-0 victory.
The big Indian disappointment was the failure of the forwards. They squandered good scoring chances from nearly a dozen penalty corners. But the side has a chance to redeem itself with a second exhibition match this weekend at Chandigarh, to be followed by five more trial games. The Indian selectors have named a pool of 18 players from which the final Olympics teams will be chosen.
