Background: Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are due to take up residence early next year in Tokyo. They will be stellar attractions at Tokyo Disneyland, now being build in some 520 acres (211.4 Hectares) of landfill in Tokyo Bay. Patterned after Disneyland in California, and Walt Disney World in Florida, this complex will be larger that its two counterparts in the United States. It will contain the accustomed Disney ingredients: Caribbean pirates, singing country bears, a Cinderella Castle and a rollcall of animals and human characters from a half century of Disney movies. After extensive research had shown that every respondent knew the identity of Mickey Mouse, the promoters anticipated this Disneyland east will draw some 10 million people a year. The 600 million U.S. dollars project has been financed mainly by Oriental Land Company, a joint venture between Keisei Electric Railways Company Ltd. and Mitsui Real Estate Development Company Ltd. Fifteen other huge Japanese corporations, including Fuji Film Company Ltd, and Coca-Cola (Japan), will sponsor various attractions and pay an annual participation fee. Walt Disney Productions is contributing the master planning, design, technology and operational experience. It took Oriental Land eight years -- from 1971 to 1979 - to proceed from their first approach to signing a contract for the project. The promoters say this Disneyland has more that 35 million people -- a higher number than the entire population of California -- living within a 90-minutes journey from its front gates.
