    Background: Brazil's Cardinal Angelo Rossi--one of the Vatican's leading administrators--last Thursday (2 December) met President Joseph Mobutu of the Zaire Republic at the start of his official visit to the country.

    As a prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Cardinals, his main purpose in Zaire (formerly Congo-Kinshasa) was to take part in ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of the country's Kasai region. About half of Zaire's 17 million people are Christians.

    Papal Nuncio Monsignor Bruno Torpigliani was accompanying the Cardinal on his visit.
