Background: The Polish cosmonaut, Major Miroslaw Giermaszewski, who took part in a Russian apace exercise has returned home to a hero's welcome.

SYNOPSIS: Major Giermaszewski arrived at Warsaw's military airport on Friday (21 July) accompanied by Russian Cosmonaut Pyotr Klimuk. Major Giermaszewski's daughter and wife watched as the major was greeted by the Minister of Defence, General Jerzy Jaruzelski.

With Major Giermaszewski was Russian Cosmonaut, Colonel Pyotr Klimuk, who partnered him in the mission which involved docking a Soviet Soyuz 30 spacecraft with the orbiting Salyut Six space station.

It was the second joint mission of its kind involving an East European under the Soviet "Interkosmos" programme. More are ???. Together, Major Giermaszewski and Colonel Klimuk spend eight days in space with the Russian crew of the Salyut Six. In Parliament Major Giermaszewski was ??? by the President of the State Council, Mr. Henryk Jablonski, with the Cross of Grunwald, one of the highest military honours of Poland.

The order dates from the early 15th century and marks a Polish victory against German knights at Grunwald.

The country's leader Edward Gierok was also among the high officials to attend the ceremony in Parliament and congratulate Major Giermaszewski.

Major Giermaszewski addressed Parliament tolling the gathering of his successful completion of mission with the help of the ground crew. Experiments in space included weightlessness effects on the body and earth photography.
