Background: Although late, we believe this film - just received from Leopoldville via New York - illustrates the near-civil war attitude prevailing in the Congo Republic.
While U.N. Secretary General Hammarskjoeld was meeting President Kasavubu Jan 5, supporters of ex-Premier Lumumba and Colonel Mobutu clashed outside U.N. headquarters in Leopoldville when the former group demonstrated, demanding their leader's release from prison.
One unfortunate was borne to the ground and brutally kicked as he lay defenceless. The initial attackers moved off, but others came moved the prostrate body until the victim lapsed into effort, stood up staggered away.
Several arrests were made during the demonstration, and some people were beaten up by Congolese military police. United Nations troops watched the incidents but did not take action.
