Background: The president of India's opposition Janata Party, Chandra Sekhar, was over half-way through his 4,000 kilometre (2,500 miles) marathon walk to protest at poverty when he arrived in the town of Dharivi on April 20. He set off on January 6 from the country's southern tip, Cape Comorin, to walk to Bombay, India's business and commercial capital. Throughout his journey, Mr Sekhar has been accompanied byu hundreds of supporters on his walk, aimed at awakening the country to continuing poverty and social injustice, which he claims is still widespread 36 years after the winning of independence. Before addressing a rally in Dharivi, Mr Sekhar passed through some of the town's slums to highlight the poor conditions in which thousands of people live. After his speech, the crowds donated handfuls of money, and Mr Sekhar was feted with garlands. He said people should not be despondent, but should take up the challenge to rebuild the country. After passing through Bombay, he was scheduled to walk through central India and to reach New Delhi on June 25 -- eight years to the day since Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi imposed a state of emergency. The Janata Party was formed in May 1977 from several parties. It aims at improving social conditions.
