Background: DESTROYERS FROM THE UNITED STATES' SIXTH FLEET BASED IN THE MEDITERRANEAN, PASSED THROUGH THE TURKISH STRAITS YESTERDAY( FRIDAY, MARCH 27TH ) ON A FLAG-SHOWING MISSION INTO THE BLACK SEA.

THE RECENT BUILT-UP OF SOVIET VESSELS IN THE AREA IN BELIEVES TO HAVE PROMPTED THE EXERCISE, INVOLVING THE FLEET ESCORT DESTROYERS U.S.S. ROBERTS AND U.S.S. STRONG.

THE SHIPS APPROACHED THE BLACK SEA FROM THE SOUTH TOWARDS THE SEASIDE VILLAGE OF ARNAVUTKOY, ON THE EUROPEAN SIDE OF THE BOSPHORUS. SAILORS AND OFFICERS LINED THE DECKS AS THE TWO DESTROYERS MANOEUVRED THROUGH THE NARROW STRAITS.

THE U.S. NAVY HAS INDICATED THAT THE ROBERTS AND STRONG WILL NOT CALL AT ANY TURKISH PORTS DURING THE TRIP.

MEANWHILE, THE MOVEMENT OF SOVIET NAVAL VESSELS INTO THE MEDITERRANEAN IR REPORTED TO BE ON THE INCREASE, WITH BOTH SIDES INDICATING REGULAR SIGHTINGS OF THE OTHER.
