TRANSCRIPT: HARRINGTON: "The motorcycle was driven by French stuntman, Frank Lucas, without any balancing on framework above. Henri had two tense moments .. once at the beginning when the front wheel on the cable clamped... he lifted it back on; and in the middle when the 300 yards of slack cable began to away. Henri finished the trip on foot because the motorcycle couldn't pass the cable car parked a few yards from the bank. Police showed up and said Henri might be charged with stunting without a permit. But they were ignored as the crowd cheered. Phil Harrington, CBC News, Niagara Falls, Ontario."

Background: Two French stuntmen and the wife of one of them made a daring crossing of the famed Niagara Falls in Canada on Wednesday (4 June).

The woman was carried upside down across the Niagara Gorge hanging by a foot from a motorcycle balanced on a greasy cable. Her husband, Henri Rechatin, rode standing atop the motorcycle and another Frenchman, Frank Lucas, drove it.

The wire, which supports a cable car, runs about 200 feet (60 metres) above the swirling waters downstream from Niagara Falls, before sloping sharply upwards toward the north bank.

    M. Rechatin said the stunt realised a dream to prove to the world that he was a professional dare-devil.

The three had told only a few reporters they would make the crossing. They feared the Niagara Parks Commission would try to stop the stunt.

    M. Rechatin stood on a specially built steel frame and his wife, Janyck, hung from another underneath the motorcycle. He is now going to ask the Commission for permission to walk across the falls on a tightrope. He was previously refused this in 1967.
