Background: British Broadcasting Corporation engineers Mar 1959 have developed and successfully tested a device enabling moving pictures to be transmitted across the Atlantic... by trans-Atlantic cable.
It is hoped that within hours of Her Majesty the Queen arriving in Canada May 18, film of her reception will be shown on British television screens.
Engineers at the BBC Design and Research centre, Kingswood Warren, Surrey, have successfully transmitted and received test film to and from Montreal, Canada...some 8,000 mile round trip.
Compared with 405 scanning lines employed on normal television screens, the device uses 200. Employing a technique similar to radar, a scanning line traverses every second frame once in eight seconds, converting light values into electrical impulses. These impulses are fed through the under-sea telephone cable as sound frequencies and translated back into light values at the receiving end.
Great Britain still maintains the lead in television research she gained when discovering and pioneering the medium in 1927.
