Background: THE MALAYSIAN KING AND QUEEN WERE GIVEN A ROUSING WELCOME WHEN THEY PAID AN OFFICIAL VISIT TO THE ABORIGINE DEVELOPMENT CENTRE AT ULU GOMBAK, 12 MILES FROM KUALA LUMPUR, ON APRIL 6.

THEIR MAJESTIES WERE RECEIVED BY THE COMMISSIONER FOR ABORIGINE AFFAIRS, DOCTOR ISKANDAR YUSOF CAREY, WHO BRIEFED THEM ON THE MOVEMENT OF ABORIGINES IN MALAYA AND THE FACILITIES PROVIDED IN JUNGLE SETTLEMENTS.

THE CENTRE, FIRST OF ITS KIND IN THE COUNTRY, HAS NEARLY 200 INMATES AND A STAFF OF 50, THE MAJORITY OF WHOM ARE ABORIGINES. PATIENTS FROM DEEP JUNGLE FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY ARE BROUGHT TO THE CENTRE BY HELICOPTER.

THE ROYAL COUPLE WERE SHOWN AROUND THE HOSPITAL, WORK THERAPY CENTRE, MATERNITY CLINIC AND LONGHOUSE.

AT THE LONGHOUSE, THE KING RECEIVED A BLOWPIPE AND A DART CONTAINER FROM THE HEADMAN, NGAH DEDEK, DURING A TRADITIONAL WELCOME CEREMONY. A 7-YEAR-OLD ABORIGINE GIRL, SITI APAT, PRESENTED THE QUEEN WITH A BOUQUET OF FLOWERS.
