Background: Crowds of enthusiastic fans greeted the arrival of the Brazilian soccer team in Madrid on June 1. After a week of acclimatisation in Portugal, the players looked all set for the 24-nation tournament. Madrid will host six games of the World Cup events, and the final match on July 11. The city's two football teams, Athletico and Real Madrid, have spent millions of dollars improving their grounds. The Santiago Bernabeu stadium, home to Real Madrid, will be the venue for three second stage cames and the final. It has been renovated at a cost of five million US dollars, and holds about 90,000 spectators. A new footbridge over the Castellana Avenue now links the white stadium to the press and communications centre at the Palacio Y Congresso, where journalists from all over the world will report on the matches. Athletico Madrid have spend nearly two million dollars to improve their Vicente Calderon Stadium for the three other Madrid based matches. The city has for months been gearing itself to welcome thousands of foreign and Spanish soccer fans.
